Marriage
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) at one time defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman and authorized states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages legally performed in other states. The Supreme Court overruled DOMA in Obergefell v. Hodges concluding that a denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples is unconstitutional.
