Late Returns and Extensions

Tax returns must be filed by April 15, every year, even if you owe no money and are not receiving a refund. If a taxpayer does owe taxes, the payment must be postmarked or paid by April 15, even if an extension for filing was granted.

Can I file my return late?

Yes. The IRS permits the April 15 deadline to be extended.

How do I get an extension?

Your first extension is granted automatically by filing Form 4868 with the IRS. The form can be filed by mail, electronically or over the telephone using the IRS telefile system.

How soon do I have to file an extension?

You must file for an extension on or before April 15.

Does an extension extend the time for payment if I owe taxes?

No. You must pay part or all of your estimated income tax due.

How long is the extension?

The extension gives you an additional 4 months-until August 15.
